Get Festival Ready: The Ultimate Summer Anthem from Fontaines D.C.

29/06/2024

A bold nostalgic statement was made upon the release of Starburster, the second single from the Irish group's fourth studio album, Romance. Fontaines have nailed it yet again, releasing the closing track of the album, Favourite, a single that creates the ultimate summer anthem filled with reminiscent lyrics. A shift in style appears to be a common theme, which is apparent once more for the group, opening up a landslide of diversity compared to what we have previously seen from Grian and the group. The sky can be the only limit for Fontaines D.C.

To put it simply, a mix of infectious melodies and exceptional lyrics are evident throughout this faultless release. Opening up the song, blissful guitar riffs are evident to kick things off, and Grians impeccable vocals immediately come into action in true Fontaines fashion. The song is a clear symbol for reminiscing about the old times, insinuating that those days are in the past. With Grian singing in his easily recognisable voice, "And days spent playing football indoors," it can be perceived that the frontman is vocalising his childhood experiences. The cycle of life is also a constant factor; the dull experiences that we have all experienced all the way through to the good, "Misery Marked Me Another Man," truly highlights these themes passionately performed by the band. A bag of emotions is supplied throughout the song.

When listening to Fontaines D.C., it is a given that the lyrics will always be of remarkable quality, with unique songwriting throughout all of the band's discography, not just this release. Backing vocals shine from Conor Deegan to complement the lead vocals from Grian, further enhancing that summer feel, which is displayed consistently. Carlos O Connell oozes pure class once again, showcasing his exceptional guitar skills from start to finish. Tom Coll excels in his drumming role as always, perfectly matching with everyone else in the band's rhythm. In a nutshell, the instrumental aspect of this song is nothing short of outstanding; it all just clicks together from start to finish. A sublime showing in every department by the boys from Dublin.

To conclude, a statement has been made by the band in their second return single. A vibrant tune sprinkled with a feeling of melancholy, what isn't there to like about this band? Fontaines D.C., are back with a bang.

Favourite will be performed live many times across the course of this year. The band will take centre stage at Reading and Leeds Festival towards the back end of August. Just months after their summer slots, a headline tour is on the cards, ending with a groundbreaking hometown show at Dublin's 3 Arena on December 6.
